A Message from Michele

Dear Friends,

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with a mom whose son is seeing one of our mental health counselors. When the son first came to AACI, he was suicidal. Fortunately, he and his family sought help, and the son is now doing better with professional care. The conversation was a good reminder for me about how important it is to get the word out about community services like ours.

One of the ways that we tell others about our work is through our Anniversary Banquet and Community Star Awards, coming up on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the San Jose Fairmont. This event is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it’s also an opportunity to celebrate AACI’s progress and educate attendees about the array of services we provide. We hope that you’ll attend and bring a friend or family member. With looming state and local government funding cuts, support from individuals like you is more critical than ever.

This year, we will be recognizing four outstanding leaders in the Asian American community at the banquet. Please read more about them in this e-newsletter. Every time I think about them, I am inspired to work harder and do more.

Thanks for reading, and please remember that if you or someone you know needs to talk with a counselor, needs assistance and doesn’t know where to turn, or just wants to get more involved in helping the community, we’d love to hear from you. Check us out at www.aaci.org or give us a call at 408-975-2730.

Sincerely,

Michele Lew
President and CEO

Year of the Rat  The Senior Wellness Program Celebrates the Year of the Rat

On February 13th, 80 seniors from AACI’s Senior Wellness Program dressed in red and celebrated the Lunar New Year with an eight-course banquet style luncheon at Dynasty Chinese Seafood Restaurant in Cupertino. Highlights included the distribution of "lucky money" red envelopes with a brand new $1 coin, a line dance performance by seniors who attend AACI’s programs, and a special dessert of “longevity buns” to encourage long life.

Each year, the Senior Wellness Program hosts a Lunar New Year luncheon for its clients, and this year’s event celebrated the Year of the Rat. Many clients look forward to the event, as the new year is a significant holiday for the Asian community and is typically celebrated with an abundance of food, family, and friends.

Events such as this are offered by AACI’s Senior Wellness Program, to improve the overall wellness of our local Asian seniors. Program services include counseling, case management, informational and referral, hot nutritional meals, English and citizenship classes, computer technology classes, health education workshops, recreational activities, social activities, and day and weekend field trips.

Participants are empowered with the skills and resources to overcome language barriers, adjust to a new culture, cope with intergenerational changes, establish a social support network, and increase their awareness and knowledge of health and community resources. AACI’s bilingual, bicultural staff members provide clients with culturally competent services, working to build trust and develop strong relationships so that seniors are interested in participating and open to sharing their questions and concerns with staff.

The Senior Wellness Program is generously sponsored by AT&T, Comcast, the Council on Aging Silicon Valley, the City of San Jose Healthy Neighborhood Venture Fund, the County of Santa Clara Senior Nutrition Program, and The Raymond Foundation.

For more information, please contact the Senior Wellness Program at (408) 975-2730 ext. 177.
